Alexander (Alex) Blacklock was a miner from Carbon. He was born on April 10, 1887 and enlisted in the Canadian Engineers No. 2 Tunnelling Company on January 12, 1916 with the rank of sapper. On June 2, 1916, during the battle at Mounty Sorrel, Blacklock was captured and taken as a prisoner of war. He escaped through Holland on October 23, 1917 and arrived in England on October 30th. Blacklock returned to Canada on December 7, 1917 and was struck off strength in Calgary on February 12, 1918. After the war, he received a letter in King George V's own handwriting, thanking him for the trials and tribulations he had endured. In 1939, when the Second World War broke out, Blacklock volunteered and served as a cook with the First Canadian Armoured Tank Brigade. He passed away on April 13, 1970 in the St. Theresa Hospital at St. Paul, Alberta and was laid to rest in the Mooswa Cemetery.
